Caravan of Love

Thought you might be interested in last Saturday's 'Caravan of Love' that Nat and I participated in with Enrique Morrones (founder and leader of the Border Angels) and his Border Angels.  We were one of 43 cars in this caravan leaving from the Border Angels small office in Barrio Logan in San Diego to head to five different sites in Tijuana where the migrants are located.  Cars were packed with various donated items needed by the migrants.  A large group with some health professionals from Colorado went to the new shelter 7 miles from the Otay border crossing, which is the replacement shelter after they left the Tijuana Sports Arena.  Another group went to the Sports Arena to bring food and clothing to the few remaining migrants.  The rest of us went to the Border Angels shelter on the beach next to the border wall in Tijuana Playas area.  There Nat and I met some of the Honduran migrants who helped unload and repack items going to the next shelter.  One told us of his long journey much of which was by foot.  Now he was so happy to be at this shelter and hoping to get his papers in order.  At the Border Angels shelter living space, food, donation room and immigration lawyers are provided for the needs of the migrants.  It provides a hopeful view of the Pacific Ocean and the US on the other side of the border walls.  After leaving this shelter the group went to two other shelters in Tijuana to bring the remaining donated items.  The energy, joy, compassion, commitment and helpfulness of each participant ignited deep gratitude in our hearts.  God bless them and the many people who donated all the items we delivered.  God bless each of the migrants on their continued journey of hope and new life.  Here are a few pictures of the border wall from the Tijuana side, the Border Angels collections in San Diego & their shelter in Tijuana and a tent area where we saw some of the migrants on our way out of Tijuana right along the border.  Our two RJM communities here in San Diego are very united in prayer for the migrants, helping them with our donations and visits on either side of the border and very much united and thankful to all of our province for the prayers and donations you have provided.  God bless you very specially for your support as we share our 3 priorities, especially Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation.

Sr. Sherly introduced the resource person to the participants. The participants were from two district Karmganj and Cachar. They were from various different villages Burnga, Manikbond, Depucheva, Latinkhal, Maskhal, Napakhal, Paniseeki, Lokhicherra and Manikbond. The participants were 37 including the staff.

Jornada Mundial de los pobres - World Day of the Poor - Journée Mondiale des Pauvres

¿Cuándo? El 19 de noviembre de 2017 será la primera Jornada Mundial de los Pobres... Y el XXXIII Domingo del tiempo ordinario de cada año.

Con motivo del año de la Misericordia, 2016, el Papa Francisco celebró el jubileo de los pobres en la fiesta de Cristo Rey. Su deseo: "Al final del Jubileo de la Misericordia quise ofrecer a la Iglesia la Jornada Mundial de los Pobres, para que en todo el mundo las comunidades cristianas se conviertan cada vez más y mejor en signo concreto del amor de Cristo por los últimos y los más necesitados. Quisiera que, a las demás Jornadas mundiales establecidas por mis predecesores, que son ya una tradición en la vida de nuestras comunidades, se añada esta, que aporta un elemento delicadamente evangélico y que completa a todas en su conjunto, es decir, la predilección de Jesús por los pobres."

Objetivo: "Esta Jornada tiene como objetivo, en primer lugar, estimular a los creyentes para que reaccionen ante la cultura del descarte y del derroche, haciendo suya la cultura del encuentro. Al mismo tiempo, la invitación está dirigida a todos, independientemente de su confesión religiosa, para que se dispongan a compartir con los pobres a través de cualquier acción de solidaridad, como signo concreto de fraternidad. Dios creó el cielo y la tierra para todos; son los hombres, por desgracia, quienes han levantado fronteras, muros y vallas, traicionando el don original destinado a la humanidad sin exclusión alguna."

When? 19 November 2017 will be the First World Day of the Poor - 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time.

"At the conclusion of the Jubilee of Mercy, I wanted to offer the Church a World Day of the Poor, so that throughout the world Christian communities can become an ever greater sign of Christ’s charity for the least and those most in need.  To the World Days instituted by my Predecessors, which are already a tradition in the life of our communities, I wish to add this one, which adds to them an exquisitely evangelical fullness, that is, Jesus’ preferential love for the poor.

I invite the whole Church, and men and women of good will everywhere, to turn their gaze on this day to all those who stretch out their hands and plead for our help and solidarity.  They are our brothers and sisters, created and loved by the one Heavenly Father.  This Day is meant, above all, to encourage believers to react against a culture of discard and waste, and to embrace the culture of encounter.  At the same time, everyone, independent of religious affiliation, is invited to openness and sharing with the poor through concrete signs of solidarity and fraternity.  God created the heavens and the earth for all; yet sadly some have erected barriers, walls and fences, betraying the original gift meant for all humanity, with none excluded."

A peace rally to conscientise authorities

(An error in the State Board Hindi Text book)

Our country, India is a land of people belonging to different cultures, traditions, languages, colour, caste and creed. Where people practice different faiths and follow different religious. The unity despite diversities is of utmost importance. But the recent happenings in terms of attacks to the Christian Minority Community are of serious concern to the very existence and living of this peace loving community. We have contributed our best in the growth, welfare and advancement of our country through our educational institutions, our hospitals and community welfare institutions.

Despite the services rendered we find ourselves trapped in various unwanted, politically motivated and supported conflicts for absolutely no genuine reason. 

One of these reasons was the reference to Jesus, our Saviour as "Haiwan". (The Hindi word for "Satan") in the text book produced, printed and recommended by the Gujarat State Board of Schools Text books by the State Government in the Hindi subject studied by the students of class IX all over the state. 

To highlight and rectify this discrepancy, a silent peace rally was conducted by all the Christian groups on 12^th June, 2017 in protest against reference to Our Lord Jesus as "Haiwan" (Satan). 

Religious leaders, principals, RJMs, and lay leaders of the Christian Churches and Missionary Schools briefed the Collector on how we show and express our respect and concern for all faiths in our institutions. They gave an account of the celebration of various festivals in schools through which children are taught to practise inter-faith harmony and sensitivity towards one and all. 

The solidarity expressed by the Christians during this rally was a note worthy feature of the entire silent protest. 

In an era where the world has reached its peak in advancements in various fields, we the Christian minorities have made massive contribution to the promotion of values, ideals and helped the youth who have educated themselves in our schools, to create a unique place and position in the society and leave an outstanding mark of their Alma Mater wherever and in whatever profession they undertake.

We hope that there will be no discrimination among us and such gross errors that lay a negative impact on young minds and hearts be taken care of by our political leaders and that peace prevails in a country that celebrates unity in diversity.

Harold D'Souza's visit to CJM - Vadodara

We, at Convent of Jesus and Mary Girls' High School, Vadodara organised a felicitation programme in honour of Mr. Harold D'Souza an ex-student of the 1980 batch on the 9^th February 2016.

Mr. Harold D'Souza is an Indian American activist who was appointed by the then President of U.S.A., Mr. Barack Obama, to the Advisory Council against Slavery. 

It was a moment of pride and honour when Mr. Harold D'Souza shared his long, torturous and painful struggle about his experience with slavery and attributed his sense of courage and strength to fight during this journey, to the values gifted to him by the school and his teachers.

All his former teachers, Mrs. Anna Lobo, Mrs. E. Francis, Ms. Amy Fernandes, Mrs. V. Mathew, Mrs. Nilima Varghese, the P.T.A. members, Sisters of the Community and his classmate, Cheryl Francis were present for the function.

Fr. Dr. Lancy Lobo and Fr. Jeetu D'Monte were also present. Fr. Dr. Lancy Lobo shared his views about slavery and congratulated Mr. Harold D'Souza for his heroic fight against bonded labour.

Ms. Cheryl shared her school experiences with Mr. Harold D'Souza as her classmate and Mrs. Francis spoke of him being a shy student.

Our Provicial Superior Sr. Magdalene presented a shawl, Manager, Sr. Tara presented a Memento and our Principal Sr. Nirmala gifted him with a sapling.

It was a memorable event which promoted inspiratlional thoughts to the students on the real life, gruesome experiences shared by Mr. Harold D'Souza.

Proyecto de Modelo de Naciones Unidas sobre los Refugiados

En el colegio de Córdoba, Argentina, las profesoras de Historia y Geografía han acompañado a los chicos de 4to año a participar en un Modelo Interno de Naciones Unidas,  como un primer paso en la motivación y capacitación en los Modelos de la OAJNU (Organización argentina de jóvenes de Naciones Unidas)

Los Modelos de Naciones Unidas transmiten, en sus etapas de capacitación y simulación, metodologías de investigación y estudio, conocimientos de diplomacia y oratoria y principalmente, los principios fundamentales de la Carta de las Naciones Unidas: pluralismo, respeto por la diversidad cultural y por los Derechos Humanos; cooperación internacional y valorización de los métodos pacíficos de resolución de conflictos

Los chicos investigaron el trasfondo de los pueblos que representan: historia, geografía, economía, cultura y ciencia, elementos que contribuyen a la autenticidad de la simulación. Al mismo tiempo pusieron su atención en las necesidades, aspiraciones y política exterior del país que cada uno representó.

Por otro lado, los alumnos de 5to y 6to año, tuvieron a cargo la capacitación de los alumnos representantes de los distintos países del mundo involucrados en la problemática a tratar. En este año el tema planteado fue el de los refugiados.

Proyecto medio ambiente: "la problemática que este proyecto  expresa, es la idea de una educación que no se reduce a educar para "conservar la Naturaleza", "concienciar personas" o "cambiar conductas". La tarea es más profunda y comprometida: educar para cambiar la sociedad, procurando que la toma de conciencia se oriente hacia un desarrollo humano que sea simultáneamente causa y efecto de la sustentabilidad y la responsabilidad global. Por tanto, desde un punto de vista operativo, el proyecto de Educación Ambiental del Colegio Jesús María supone tanto el análisis crítico del marco socioeconómico que ha determinado las actuales tendencias insostenibles (información y sensibilización), como la potenciación de las capacidades humanas para transformarlo (actuación), dándose gran importancia a la preparación de una ciudadanía responsable y capacitada para la toma de decisiones en un mundo global y complejo."

Proyecto SAS: secretariado de acción social: "¿Qué estrategia utilizar para despertar en la Comunidad Educativa el sentido de la Solidaridad?... Viendo la necesidad de formar en nuestras alumnas el valor de la solidaridad elaboramos este proyecto pretendiendo fortalecer los valores sociales, familiares e institucionales, fomentando en las alumnas el espíritu de solidaridad y de ayuda por el más necesitado, el liderazgo en valores, como la justicia y la paz desde la familia, que experimentados en la cotidianidad, son básicos para tener una convivencia sana, armónica, que nos lleve a vivir en paz y construir una nueva sociedad."

Une communauté de Sillery accorde du soutien à une famille réfugiée et accueille  occasionnellement des réfugiés lors de leur arrivée au Québec.  Une Religieuse continue d’appuyer des familles de réfugiés qui désirent s’installer au Canada en aidant dans les innombrables démarches que les gens doivent faire pour être acceptés par le Canada.  Des Religieuses restent en contact avec les nombreuses familles de réfugiés qu’elles ont accueillies pendant des années.

A community gives support to a family of refugees and occasionally welcomes refugees when they arrive in Quebec. A Sister continues to help families of refugees who want to come to Canada. Sisters are still in touch with the families of refugees they received and helped for many years.

Maison des enfants de St-Roch, Québec

Fondée en 1994 par les Religieuses Jésus-Marie, la Maison des enfants de St-Roch est un organisme qui vient en aide aux familles d’un quartier défavorisé de Québec.  Elle veut donner aux enfants un lieu d’appartenance et d’écoute où l’enfant se sent accueilli et soutenu. Plusieurs bénévoles travaillent en collaboration avec les Religieuses soit comme membres du Conseil d’administration ou comme accompagnateurs des enfants dans les différentes activités offertes.

House of Children at ST-ROCH

Founded in 1994 by the Religious of Jesus and Mary, The House of Children of ST-ROCH is an establishment that comes to the help of families living in the underprivileged section of the city of Quebec.  It hopes to give to these children a sense of belonging and a feeling of being listened to, a place where there are welcomed and supported.  Several volunteers work in collaboration with the Sisters, either as members of the Administrative Council or to accompany the children in the different activities offered.

Centre missionnaire St-Roch

Un groupe du Centre missionnaire de St-Roch se prépare à partir pour la Bolivie et un autre groupe pour le Mexique. Ces groupes reçoivent une formation avant de partir et s’impliquent à la Maison des Enfants St-Roch dans un esprit de solidarité et de partage.

Several Sisters of the province knit bedcovers and clothes for the missions and the families of the ST-ROCH district.

One of our Sisters makes artistic knitted lace in return for a donation to our mission in Gabon.  She is 93 years old.

One Sister works in collaboration with a team of lawpersons in a center where families of low income can come to buy clothes and various articles.

Appreciating the Lord’s Special Ones

participated in a Poster Competition on the topic 

“Rights of  Persons with Disability”

organized by the Joy Foundation on 3^rd Nov. 2015. 

The students were to draw how they would accept special people and enable them to become aware of the many other gifts God has bestowed on them. By utilizing all those abilities, they would be able to live a happy and successful life.
