3 Priority: Living a life commited to justice, peace and the integrity of creation (English)

We remember our 3 Priority

mano de Claudina

"This is what Yahweh asks of you, only this....  that you act justly, that you love tenderly, that you walk humbly with your God.” (Micah 6:8)
“We seek ways to defend human life in all its stages: to denounce violence, to promote human rights especially the dignity and empowerment of women, to promote a culture of peace and pardon” (AC. 96)
“The ecological crisis is a moral issue… respect for life and for the dignity of the human person extends also to the rest of creation"(Message of Pope John Paul II for the Day of Peace, 1990)

MOTIVATION:
We look with anguish on the violence and lack of peace in our world, the abuse of the earth and her resources, all signs of the breakdown of right relationships with God, with others, with creation and with ourselves.
The need to heal this brokenness impels us to work for the restoration of the harmony and mutual care that we know to be God’s own desire for the world.
We live this call in the conviction that, by joining with like-minded persons, we become stronger, and can be a force for change.
This commitment challenges us to:
  • Open our hearts wide to love and cherish the beauty of our world, and to be touched by its suffering.
  • Examine courageously and honestly our habitual ways of acting, and open ourselves to learning new and alternate ways.
  • Recognize our kinship with the created world, and our clear responsibility to protect and care for it.
LINES OF ACTION:
1. We listen to the victims of injustice and violence, and we stand with and for them.
2. We commit ourselves to the responsible use of natural resources, and to care for the earth at a personal level, in our communities, in our educational centers, and in all our ministries.
3. We unite with and actively participate in organizations and institutions that work for ecology and human rights, especially those of women and children.
4. We strengthen our membership in UNANIMA, and our commitment to its mission.
5. We promote education that forms persons for active citizenship, critical conscience, and responsible use of the means of communication.

St. Anne’s High School, Camp Pune

On 3 Priorities of the 36th General Chapter

The theme ‘Making Difference’ highlighted the third priority of our Mother Foundress. Children put up an endearing play on this issue. A shadow play introduced the topic where parents were made aware of how we humans have destroyed and exploited this beautiful earth created by God.
Students from Std. 5 to 10 put up a street play where children faced problems due to pollution on the road. A classroom scene was created where students gave various suggestions on how they could reduce waste in school. An endearing enaction by small children brought out the harsh reality of how human beings are encroaching on the rights of animals by spreading their habitat and cutting down forest.
Awareness was created for conserving our environment and learning to become responsible citizens. That’s what all our larger education goals are about.

Cleanliness Drive was held for the students of Std VIII &IX. Students accompanied by teachers enthusiastically holding banners and charts on cleanliness walked around the areas near Convent Street and St. Vincent’s Street. They not only made people aware through the rally on keeping the surrounding clean but also picked papers and plastic. The drive ended on a positive note.

Living a 3 Priority from Nigeria (2nd part)

LIVING A LIFE THAT IS COMMITTED
TO JUSTICE, PEACE AND INTEGRITY OF CREATION
IN LAGOS, NIGERIA

This year, we have already contacted a priest who is well vast in the Social Doctrine of the Church in Lagos to help us out with the formation on Social Doctrine of the church and he was very kind to accept our request. He is only waiting for our schedule. We hope this formation will be programmed to go on for the whole year if possible. For us again, this “entails a commitment which requires a gradual and systematic assimilation of the Social Doctrine of the Church (SDC) in order to discern God’s call in the challenges of the social reality and in the responses which need to be given thereby promoting the values of justice, peace and integrity of creation (Cf. General Objective, n. 49)”We can only offer what we have and so, if we know better or we are better informed, we will no doubt be able to offer others better services also.

And we have planned a formation for all our collaborators too, so that we could all have the same priorities in mind as we carry out our various missions and responsibilities. We did it last year and planned to continue this year too.
The AFJM in Lagos came out with a beautiful project for this year and the community is ready and willing to collaborate with them to bring this project to a reality. In one of the Parish’s outstations ( a chapel, St. Raphael’s Church),  the majority of the people there, are fishermen and are people from Benin Republic who migrated and are living there doing their fishing jobs.

Living a 3 Priority from Nigeria

LIVING A LIFE THAT IS COMMITTED
TO JUSTICE, PEACE AND INTEGRITY OF CREATION
IN LAGOS, NIGERIA

For us here in the Delegation of Africa, living this 3rd priority like the other priorities continues to be a continuous call and challenge. The beautiful thing is that, we are all making little but steady efforts in living it out. The numerous needs in this area cannot discourage us. Each community, every year commits herself in living it out in the little ways they can.
As we wait for other communities to send in their reports on how they are doing this, I will go ahead to share with you about Lagos which I am more aware of.

Already at the Delegation level, we had drawn out and committed ourselves to how we are going to live this priority. One of the ways was to form ourselves in the Catholic Social Teachings and Sr. Encarna Viarnes, the Superior of the Delegation continues to encourage, animates and provide materials to help us to advance in this aspect of our option. I remember in one of her recommendations after her last year’s visitation in Lagos; she encouraged us to continue in the formation on the Social Doctrine of the Church (SDC) and to be involve in a JPIC group or association.
