Course: Human Rights, The Right to Freedom of Expression

Take action for human rights. Learn to defend human rights by understanding the right to freedom of expression.

About this course

Freedom of expression is a human right. Learn from the experts at Amnesty International how to claim and defend your rights in this human rights course.

This short course will equip you with the knowledge to understand and claim your right to freedom of expression, and the skills and confidence to take action to defend it.

You will be challenged to think critically and devise effective actions to defend the human rights of others. You will be able to adapt the human rights of freedom of expression, association and assembly to real life situations and come face-to-face with human rights activists on the front line of human rights defense.

This is Amnesty International’s first human rights MOOC. Be prepared for active, fast-paced learning, connecting with course participants across the world to bridge the gap between theory and practice and turn yourself into an agent of change.

You will explore human rights through case studies, including real cases of individuals at risk. You will discover how actions are developed to defend people against human rights violations.

Course facilitators and moderators from across the human rights movement will listen, guide and interact with participants.

Consider signing up with a friend or group to take part in optional group activities together. Join the conversation on the Amnesty International Human Rights Education Facebook page.

No previous knowledge is needed. Register today to take part in a global human rights experience.

From USA: Committee on JPIC

REPORT of SECOND MEETING

On Saturday, October 24, 8 members of the group met in a phone conference.  At this session, based on our enthusiastic reading of “Laudato Si,” we shared on three points: one new insight, one challenge, and suggestions for concrete application. We were aware of not wanting to “reinvent the wheel” and of the many Church/congregational documents, celebrations and resources already calling for province attention. We then reflected on the booklet, The Journey Makes Us One, which some communities have begun to use and find helpful.  So we decided to focus on it as we “enlarge the conversation” to include everyone in the province.
We INVITE EACH AND ALL to take up The Journey Makes Us One and let it be a guide on the journey as we respond to Pope Francis call to make “genuine care for our own lives and our relationships with nature  inseparable from fraternity, justice and faithfulness to others”. [#70].
By exploring our Chapter priorities in this way together, we can encounter anew the divine mercy of Jesus, the tenderness of Mary, the compassion of Claudine, and our union with every creature in the cosmos.

Note: The booklet "The Journey Makes Us One" - is  a collection of prayers and reflections - prepared by the Region of America to deepen the three priorities.

From Haiti

"I started going to Haiti in 2012 with the Quest program and I instantly fell in love. I went back in 2013 and did the camp again. I graduated college in 2014, then decided to put my masters on hold, start Creole lessons and to go to Haiti for the year. I was beyond excited to head back to my second home!

I decided to make a playground for the children - a place they could finally call their own - a place they could go and just be a kid and have fun.

The outpouring from people was amazing and over 2,000 dollars was raised!

We started building the playground the end of April and it took us two weeks. It went so fast because the whole Haitian community was involved, working every minute.
The best feeling in the world was seeing the children play on it for the first time. They were so happy, and loving life! Then when they came up and thanked me, I just cried I was so overwhelmed with emotion.
I want to thank all the donors who have given to the Haitian community in Gros-Morne! I hope you all know how much you have done for the people of Gros-Morne! Your help and support does not go unseen, and we appreciate it every day." Elizabeth Ratke
